MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN

INTRODUCTION:

Grinding Techniques (Pty) Ltd is seeking a skilled and reliable Maintenance Electrician to join our dynamic maintenance team. As a well-established manufacturer in the abrasive industry, we pride ourselves on maintaining high standards in safety, efficiency, and production reliability. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the optimal performance of our electrical systems and production equipment through proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

INTERESTED APPLICANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Demonstrate strong mechanical and electrical aptitude in maintenance and repair activities.
  • Apply analytical and problem solving skills to diagnose and resolve equipment issues effectively.
  • Maintain a high standard of workmanship with strong attention to detail.
  • Work independently and remain effective under pressure in a fast paced environment.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate well within the maintenance and production teams.
  • Uphold company standards for health, safety and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compile and update electrical equipment registers to maintain safety compliance.
  • Install, maintain and repair electrical control, wiring, electrical reticulation, distribution boards, and lighting systems.
  • Conduct fault finding and troubleshooting of electrical control systems.
  • Conduct routine maintenance inspections and tests on portable electrical equipment, electrical control, electrical reticulation and distribution systems, and substations to ensure compliance with safety and legal standards.
  • Conduct electrical upgrades, new installations, and improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems as needed.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to equipment breakdowns.
  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new equipment and electrical systems.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to maximize machinery efficiency and performance.
  • Adhere to best engineering practices.
  • Ensure all electrical work complies with the EIR, EMR, SANS 10142-1 and relevant standards, and issue Certificates of Compliance (CoC) where applicable.
  • Comply with company health and safety rules and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
  • Perform various tasks as per job cards issued by the maintenance manager / supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and replacements, and provide detailed reports.
  • Be available to perform standby duties and work night shifts as required by operational needs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 3 years post-trade experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or FMCG environment.
  • Qualified Electrician with a valid Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) recognized by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
  • Grade 12 / N3 Certificate or NQF Level 4 in Electrical Engineering.
  • Wireman’s license (Installation Electrician) – registered, in the process of registering, or willing to obtain.
  • Practical experience as an Installation Electrician in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Proficient in diagnosing faults on electrical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot under pressure during breakdowns.
  • Skilled in using workshop machinery (drill press, welding, and cutting tools).
  • Skilled in using hand tools and electrical measuring instruments to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Competence in reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical engineering drawings.
  • Basic understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
  • Sound knowledge of electrical control systems.
  • Knowledge of VSDs, PLCs and instrumentation.
  • Basic mechanical, pneumatics, and hydraulics system knowledge.
  • Good understanding of SANS 10142-1, EIR and EMR.
  • Attention to detail and high-quality workmanship.
